Back pain can occur from a big variety of causes, such as Acute Pulmonary Edema. Edema means that fluids are collected and built up, thus damaging cellular tissue. It is like watering a cactus too much. At a point, the water collected inside the plant’s body will lead to its death.

Acute edema will result in heart failure, but it will also cause pains in the back.

Causes of edema:

Edema can occur from smoky air breathing, myocarditis, valvular diseases, overdose of barbiturates, or drugs like heroin or morphine. Acute edema can be a sequel of ARDS (Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome) and Atherosclerosis.

The lack of heart pumping can cause pressure upon the chest, thus damaging the spinal cord’s structure and mobility. Overarching the back is where back pain starts, since the chest is restricted from scarring and/or edema.

Edema shows up at X-rays, ABG tests, or ECG. If neglected, edema can lead to big health troubles, such as Digoxin Toxicity, Hypernatremia, Hypokalemia, Excessive Fluid, and pulmonary embolism, which seriously affects blood circulation. Hypokalemia means a decrease of the potassium intake that is required by blood to fulfill its functions in the body. What happens is the decrease of potassium to the blood causes excessive generation of fluids that lead to the muscular mass, which cause weakness. The back pain is not the most important ailment to be treated in this phase, since the heart’s damage could lead to cardiac arrest.

Acute edema usually demands restrictions of fluid intake, while taking intra venous substitutes to prevent dehydration. Oxygen could help, as well as other medication. Often patient will be prescribed to remain consistent in a high position, such as Fowler’s.

Symptoms of acute edema:

Amongst the most common symptoms are:

Fatigue

Murmurs

Coughing

Exerted Dyspnea

Hypophysis

Orthopnea

One-side heart failure

Low output of cardiac function

This ailment can result in other symptoms beside this list.

Oxygen therapy, as well as limited fluids ingestion are beneficial, and they will be most probably indicated by the doctor. In order not to stress the cells tissue, isometric exercises, and bed rest are indicated. Isometric exercises imply pushing muscles next to a sturdy surface, whereas the muscles are put under tension, but in the same time restricted from contractions. The exercises are prescribed in medical treatments against back pain. It is also strongly advisable to treat hemorrhoids, in case you have any, because they can cause you a lot of troubles and big pains.

Edema can cause tenderness, or ulcers of the legs, due to the fact that it affects the joints and the muscles, as well as the neck veins, thus hitting the back pain starting point.

Summary: back pain can be initiated by edema, when the heart is not pumping blood, thus damaging the connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, muscles, or joints. Skeleton is a very delicate and sensitive organ: damage it, and back pain will occur, together with swelling, inflammation and other damages, which can be so severe as to become life threatening, not to mention that they prevent you from exercising, thus contributing even more to the overall damage of your health..

Neurological disorders are a major cause of back pain, which affects maybe millions of persons across the world. However, you’ve just seen how other ailments, like edema, can cause the same back pain, thus making diagnosis a challenge and an art.

Well, at least I thought that. Yesterday I’ve experienced the worst of all back pains in the world. Let me tell you how it started: I was doing some jobs in the garden, taking care for some vegetables I’ve seeded this spring. At a point, I bended over to take something from the ground and I had a big surprise, as I wasn’t able to get back at the vertical position. So there I was, in the middle of nowhere (my garden and my indoor greenhouse are far away from houses), not being able to stand anymore. Walking was also out of question. I had no mobile phone with me, so I had to figure out a solution to get back inside my house.

While I was thinking, a neighbor just passed by. I called him, and luckily he heard my voice and came to see what happened. After exchanging a few words, my neighbor ended up by taking me over his shoulder and carried me like then the whole way through the mud of the garden, into the house.

Getting inside the house, I called an ambulance and when they arrived I realized that I had tons of dirt under my fingernails.

Do you want to know why? Because my neighbor is a 9 years old boy, and he’s not so tall, so my hands were on the ground while he was carrying me. Funny, huh?

Young people, especially males, tend to show off, so they cannot accept they suffer from something and they need to take care of their actions for the rest of their lives.

They will attempt to lift weights, which is absolutely forbidden in case of back pains, because they may exacerbate those pains and increase the damage to the spinal cord.

Young people would tend to neglect the way they bend themselves when they want to take something from the floor: the correct movements needs to be done from the knees, and not from the waist. Moreover, if their purpose in bending is to grab something heavy from the floor, they might end up in the hospital easily.

Back pain is not a joke: it needs to be seriously treated and taken care of. So, if you suffer from back pain, go see your doctor and obey the medical advice you get, even if you think that you are still young and brave. Be brave, not stupid.

Few fractures may include damage of the hips. Intertrochanteric, intracapsular, and extracapsular is the modes of hip fractures doctors consider. In addition, yes, hip fractures cause back pain.

When doctors investigate back or hip fractures they often consider trauma, maturity, osteoporosis, osteomyelitis, multiple myeloma, immobility, steroids, Cushing syndrome, malnutrition, bone tumors, amongst the possible causes of the bones to get fractured.

Osteomyelitis is a bone disease, which causes inflammation of bones and marrow. The problem often starts with infections. Osteoporosis is also a bone disease, which occurs amongst women, especially after menopause. The bones after menopause often become highly permeable or porous, which causes easy breaks and slow healing processes.

How fractures are assessed by doctors?

Physicians usually assess fractures by reviewing pain caused by motion, edema, tenderness, or immobility. If one leg is apparently shorter than the other one, it is most likely a fractured hip is the cause.

X-Rays are a good instrument in detecting fractures and deciding if they can be simply immobilized to get cured, or some surgery is required.

Herniated nucleus pulposa

This is the medical term that defines slip disks, namely those ruptures of inter vertebral disks of the backbone.
The interruption can occur in different regions of the spine, such as the L4 and L5 level (lumbo-sacral region), as well as cervical C5-7. The cervical region is at the neck and this is why sometimes back pain can be caused by neck and back strains, trauma, congenital malformations of the vertebrae, lifting of heavy items, degenerated disks, or even weakness of ligaments.

At some people, protrusions develop on the “nucleus pulposus”, generating pain, due to the fact that the nerves along the spinal cord are touched. If the condition persists for a longer time, the patient can lose control of either hands or legs, depending on the spinal region where these protrusions appeared.

The lower back region, also called the Lumbrosacral region, if affected, may cause the pain to extend to the buttocks and to the legs. Weakness, numbness and tingling are amongst the symptoms patients will feel.

The upper back region is called the Cervical. Damages in this region will result in neck stiffness, rigidity, weakness, and a tingling sensation in hands.

When medics investigate back pain, they will run some tests in order to set a precise diagnostic. Diagnostics may become clear from tendon reflex, CSF, EMG, myelograms, XRays, or Laséque signs. The CSF determines protein increases, while EMG shows whether the spinal nerves are involved. The space between disks is tested with X-Rays. Tendon reflexes are also very important, because if they are missing, it shows how affected the nerves are.

The myelogram show eventual signs of spinal cord compression. And the poor patient will have to endure all these tests only to find out that his pain won’t go away without suergery.

Statistics have shown that it affects the majority of the world’s population, but in different degrees, so many people just ignore it. You cannot truly know anything, yet according to statistics, the majority of people in the world suffer some degree of back pain. The biggest cause of back pain are not injuries, but some medical conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, lumbago, sciatica. Back pain will prevent you from living a normal life, it won’t allow you to use daily items such as the kitchen gadgets, not to mention that many times it won’t allow you to simply walk.

Diagnosis of back pain causes can be very difficult, as some of the ailments that cause it are not necessarily visible at X-Rays. A CT scan can reveal hidden info and help doctors in getting to the pain source.

Moreover, back pain can derive from diseases of the feet, such as swelling, heel pain, battered ligaments, burning soles, etc. Sport injuries, car or bicycle accidents, inappropriate bending and weights lifting can all result in nasty and long lasting back pain.

In order to avoid back pain, you need to know how your spine is structured, how it functions and what damages it can suffer as consequence of your wrong behavior. With a little bit of anatomy and medical education, everybody can prevent a big deal of back pain, for a life without stress.
