Scared by Earthquake? Preparedness Can Save You

  • Posted on May 26, 2009 at 2:35 am

If you are scared by earthquakes, then you’d better make sure to have your earthquake preparedness well in place and ready for the moment. This means that you should prepare some kind of emergency kit, put everything in a handy bag and place it in a place where you can easily reach when needed. The kit should contain some water, food supplies for a few days, pain killers, sterile bandages, a few candles and a flashlight. As you probably know, gas, water and electricity supplies are automatically cut in case of major earthquake, so you may be left in total darkness, if that happens at night. Being prepared doesn’t mean you need to get scared that it will happen. It may never come, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, I think.

Back Pain And Acute Edema

  • Posted on October 16, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Back pain can occur from a big variety of causes, such as Acute Pulmonary Edema. Edema means that fluids are collected and built up, thus damaging cellular tissue. It is like watering a cactus too much. At a point, the water collected inside the plant’s body will lead to its death.

Acute edema will result in heart failure, but it will also cause pains in the back.

Causes of edema:

Edema can occur from smoky air breathing, myocarditis, valvular diseases, overdose of barbiturates, or drugs like heroin or morphine. Acute edema can be a sequel of ARDS (Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome) and Atherosclerosis.

The lack of heart pumping can cause pressure upon the chest, thus damaging the spinal cord’s structure and mobility. Overarching the back is where back pain starts, since the chest is restricted from scarring and/or edema.

Edema shows up at X-rays, ABG tests, or ECG. If neglected, edema can lead to big health troubles, such as Digoxin Toxicity, Hypernatremia, Hypokalemia, Excessive Fluid, and pulmonary embolism, which seriously affects blood circulation. Hypokalemia means a decrease of the potassium intake that is required by blood to fulfill its functions in the body. What happens is the decrease of potassium to the blood causes excessive generation of fluids that lead to the muscular mass, which cause weakness. The back pain is not the most important ailment to be treated in this phase, since the heart’s damage could lead to cardiac arrest.

Acute edema usually demands restrictions of fluid intake, while taking intra venous substitutes to prevent dehydration. Oxygen could help, as well as other medication. Often patient will be prescribed to remain consistent in a high position, such as Fowler’s.

Symptoms of acute edema:

Amongst the most common symptoms are:

  • Fatigue
  • Murmurs
  • Coughing
  • Exerted Dyspnea
  • Hypophysis
  • Orthopnea
  • One-side heart failure
  • Low output of cardiac function

This ailment can result in other symptoms beside this list.

Oxygen therapy, as well as limited fluids ingestion are beneficial, and they will be most probably indicated by the doctor. In order not to stress the cells tissue, isometric exercises, and bed rest are indicated. Isometric exercises imply pushing muscles next to a sturdy surface, whereas the muscles are put under tension, but in the same time restricted from contractions. The exercises are prescribed in medical treatments against back pain. It is also strongly advisable to treat hemorrhoids, in case you have any, because they can cause you a lot of troubles and big pains.

Edema can cause tenderness, or ulcers of the legs, due to the fact that it affects the joints and the muscles, as well as the neck veins, thus hitting the back pain starting point.

Summary: back pain can be initiated by edema, when the heart is not pumping blood, thus damaging the connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, muscles, or joints. Skeleton is a very delicate and sensitive organ: damage it, and back pain will occur, together with swelling, inflammation and other damages, which can be so severe as to become life threatening, not to mention that they prevent you from exercising, thus contributing even more to the overall damage of your health..

Neurological disorders are a major cause of back pain, which affects maybe millions of persons across the world. However, you’ve just seen how other ailments, like edema, can cause the same back pain, thus making diagnosis a challenge and an art.

My New Job

I’ve just got a new job. You’ll never guess what I’ll be doing for a living, so I’m going to tell you right now: I’m going to do cleaning services. Yes, I’ll be a cleaner in a food processing factory, so next time you buy meat or salami, think of me, because I’m cleaning the tools, ovens, meat preparation tables, and refrigerating rooms.

Today I was given a brief training in which I learned how to use my future working tools. Let me tell you that industrial steam cleaners don’t have anything in common with commercial steam cleaners we all know and use at home: they are true cleaning monsters, their jet of vapors can practically clean everything, no matter how dirty it may be. This is what I call cleanliness. Too bad those steam machines are too big to get one at home!

How Active Are You?

I don’t know about others, but I just love to spend my weekends outdoors, doing some sports. I’m not a sport professional, it is just a hobby, but it helps me stay fit and have a good mood, especially if I also follow the healthy eating recipes guide I found to be working great for my life. Sometimes I just take my tactical pants, my fishing rods and some lures and I go fishing in the nearby lake. Maybe I’m not moving too much in those weekends, but is it still an enjoyable sport.

Some other times, we go to play bowling. I take my family with me, because they also enjoy sports, so we have a lot of fun at bowling, squash, or even paintball. Of course, their sports gear costs me a lot, but it is worth paying, because I like my kids to be active. Besides, I like it when they try to build muscle quickly, as this will save them from all weight loss pains I’ve been through for years in my life.

They will probably live longer than us.
